Ever heard of a Guama?

One of the trees in our back yard produces a fruit called GUAMA!

Jorge cutting down the Guamas.

We got down a bunch to take out to our friends and staff in Bocachica.

They are long pods and inside are rows of black seeds covered with a sweet cotton-like fruit. It´s what I imagine Manna tasted like.

After you eat the fruit off you are left with the seeds. I´m not sure about this but I have heard that some people use these to make jewelry and crafts.

Our ¨New¨ Car!

This is it, folks, our new used car! We are still pinching ourselves to remind us it´s true! It is a 2003 Mazda Allegro and the previous owner took really good care of it. It only has about 29,000 miles. I can´t even begin to explain what a relief and a blessing it is to have your own transportation!!! It makes a HUGE difference in your day-to-day life!!!! Thank you JESUS!!!!

Modes of Transportation

Jorge and I have been looking for a vehicle for the last couple of months and we are really hoping that soon we will have our own set of wheels! My mom has loaned us the money to buy one and we can´t wait! Until then we will continue using public transportation...

This is the bus we take from Turbaco to Cartagena. Once we are in Cartagena we have to take another one to get to downtown.

Motorcycles are a very popular way to get around. They are cheap and fast. Not the safest way to go though, as you can imagine! We use these in Turbaco and sometimes in Cartagena but we try to avoid them because there are SSOOO many motorcycle accidents each year!

In Turbaco, one of our favorites is the MOTO TAXI! It is a motorcycle with a covered cart attached to the back. Here is the view from inside.

The moto taxi can fit 3 people plus there is room in the back for your groceries or packages.

Jorge and I usually walk into Turbaco to get our groceries and then on the way back home we get the moto taxi to bring us and our bags. Every time we ride in it we get such a kick out of it!

This, however, is the Renault Symbol and we currently looking at the possiblity of buying one of these. We have the opportunity to get a 2004 that is in really good condition, low milage, good gas milage, and a decent price (for Colombian standards which are WAY TOO HIGH for American standards!!!). It would cost us around $13,000 plus we want to pay for a year´s worth of insurance and we have to get our Colombian driver´s licenses which will cost us about $120 usd each! So now you can see why we have never tried to buy a car before. It is crazy how expensive it is here! But we are to the point now where we REALLY need one so we are biting the bullet! We really wanted to get a double cabin pick-up truck but they are way out of our price range so it looks like we will settle for a car. We should know something over the next few days.

Making Proyecto Libertad History

Today Marley and I sent Samy and Werling off on their way to Isla Fuerte where we are starting our new operating location. For some time now Jorge has been planning this. The idea is to multiply the work that we are doing in Bocachica, to mobilize Bocachica natives into missions, and also to establish a mission station at a half-way point between Bocachica and the mouth of the Atrato River, where we one day hope to minister with the boat. Jorge has been visiting Isla Fuerte (translated: Strong Island) over the last few months and making connections with the local pastors. His last trip was about a week ago and he was able to find a house to rent. It is about a 6 hour trip from Cartagena that involves two buses, a motorcylce and a boat! There is no electricity, running water or indoor plumbing. Samy and Werling have accepted the challenge to initiate this pioneering effort and today they set off with their backpacks, a guitar, a stove and a suitcase full of kitchen supplies. They will be establishing relationships in the community, getting involved with the local church and helping to prepare for a special event we are planning for June. It will be a 2 week Mini-DTS... a short disciplehsip course geared for the youth of the local region. We will be hosting and running this course and have already recieved confirmation from the pastors and it looks like we will have a full house. This is a history-making moment for us as a ministry and we are excited about what is to come! Please keep this new effort in your prayers and we will keep you posted!
